Bone Graft

Bone Graft

You may have heard of bone grafting or had this procedure recommended by our Dr. While it may sound daunting, it is an incredibly beneficial procedure that supplements bone that recedes through tooth loss.

While many natural-looking restorations can bridge the gap left behind by a missing tooth, almost all of them rest above the gumline. Only dental implants go beyond to anchor the bone, but there has to be sufficient bone for the implant to adhere to.

Why You Need Bone Grafting

When a tooth is lost and is not restored for some time, the jaw bone underneath will start to shrink and impact neighboring teeth. This creates a sunken appearance and often makes patients appear older than they really are.

Without enough solid bone, patients do not qualify for a dental implant unless they opt for bone graft surgery to restore their bone density.

The Bone Grafting Process

Every bone grafting procedure is different depending on your particular needs. The best results involve cadaver bone, which may sound unlikely, but in truth, is very safe and common.

We use bone grafting surgery to restore the gap in your smile and to provide a solid foundation that can host new bone growth. As you heal, your body replaces the bone graft with your natural bone.

Bone grafting can be combined with other dental procedures, especially for severe gum disease infection. If a dental extraction is necessary, we may recommend a bone graft for optimal results.
